Chapter 2 - The Black-and-White Truth

Evelyn lunged forward to grab the folder, but she was too late.

Adrian’s large hand clamped down on the dark leather. With a swift, forceful motion, he yanked the folder away from her grasp and flipped it open.

A glossy, black-and-white strip of paper slipped from the pockets and fluttered onto the polished marble floor.

Adrian stared down at it. It was an ultrasound. A highly detailed, third-trimester scan of a perfectly healthy baby. Stamped across the top right corner in digital white text was the gender: FEMALE.

The air in the luxurious closet evaporated. Adrian’s chest stopped moving. He slowly bent down, picked up the ultrasound, and then raised his intense dark eyes to stare at Evelyn’s light blue maternity dress.

"You're pregnant," Adrian whispered, the cinematic realization crashing over his hardened exterior. "You're carrying my child."

"She is my child," Evelyn corrected him, her voice a low, lethal whisper. "You gave up your right to be a father six months ago."

Adrian’s mind violently snapped back to the day he destroyed their marriage.

Six months ago, Adrian had walked into this very bedroom and handed Evelyn a stack of divorce papers. He had looked at her with pure, unadulterated disgust, calling her a barren disappointment who couldn't give him the male heir his grandfather's trust demanded.

He had proudly announced that his beautiful, twenty-five-year-old mistress, Chloe, was already three months pregnant with his son. He told Evelyn to pack her things and leave quietly.

Instead of fighting, Evelyn had simply taken the papers in silence. She hadn't told him that she had taken a pregnancy test that very morning.
