Chapter 2 - The Mother-in-Law’s Venom

Emily didn't fall to the floor. She caught her balance, her designer heels clicking sharply against the imported marble.
She slowly turned her head back. She didn't scream, and she didn't burst into hysterical tears. A slow, agonizing burn radiated across her left cheek. She raised a trembling hand, pressing her fingers gently against the rapidly reddening skin.
For three years, Emily had played the perfect, quiet, supportive wife. She had believed Daniel when he said his high-stress corporate job made him temperamental. She had believed Evelyn when she said Emily just needed to "try harder" to fit into their billionaire lifestyle.
But tonight, the illusion was completely dead.
Daniel took another aggressive step forward, raising his arm and pointing a demanding, furious finger directly toward the heavy mahogany front doors of the mansion.
"You heard my son," Evelyn chimed in, her voice dripping with toxic, smug mockery as she stepped out from behind the sweeping staircase. "Leave. We are entirely done dealing with your pathetic, middle-class drama."
Emily looked at the older woman. The sheer audacity of Evelyn’s comment was staggering.
