Chapter 5 - The Black Folder

General Reed looked up at the Colonel, her dark eyes narrowing slightly at his rigid posture. She recognized the specific tension in her subordinate's jaw.

"What is it, Mercer?" General Reed asked quietly.

Colonel Mercer stepped closer to the table. He reached under his arm and produced a thick, highly classified black security folder. He placed it directly onto the white tablecloth, right next to the blank place card Brooke had mockingly thrown down minutes earlier.

"Ma'am, we have a Level-One security matter," Colonel Mercer stated seriously, his voice carrying clearly over the dead silence of the nearby tables.

Brooke took a hesitant step forward, her heart hammering against her ribs. She assumed they were talking about a global threat, completely unaware that the crosshairs were already locked onto her chest.

Colonel Mercer opened the black folder. He didn't look at the General. He turned his head slowly, his cold, uncompromising gaze locking directly onto Brooke.

"Thirty minutes ago, our localized perimeter alarms were tripped," Colonel Mercer stated firmly. "Brooke Harper's badge entered Building 7 tonight."

A collective gasp rippled through the nearby guests. Building 7 was the heavily guarded, off-site military research annex where the new drone schematics were being housed.

👉 Brooke’s mind violently short-circuited, entirely oblivious to the fact that the true traitor was sitting right next to her.
