Chapter 2 - The Silent Restraint

The cinematic tension in the grand ballroom was completely paralyzing.
The wealthy guests surrounding them erupted into cruel, mocking laughter, holding up their expensive smartphones to record the pathetic maid being completely humiliated by the city's most eligible bachelor.
Standing right beside Grant was his actual fiancée, Vanessa. She was a stunning, thirty-something socialite with perfectly styled blonde hair, wearing a diamond necklace worth more than Emily’s entire life.
Vanessa laughed cruelly, leaning into Grant’s shoulder. She was the one who had intentionally "tripped" and spilled her wine down Emily’s back.
"Oh, come on, Emily!" Vanessa sneered loudly over the music. "Don't you want to be a billionaire's wife? Just a quick dance! Let's see your footwork!"
Emily didn't cry. She didn't drop to her knees and beg to be excused. The absolute, terrifying restraint she showed was infinitely more powerful than breaking down in tears.
She stood perfectly still on the marble floor, completely ignoring the ringing laughter of the billionaires surrounding her. She looked dead into Grant’s dark, arrogant eyes.
She knew exactly who Grant Vanderbilt was. But more importantly, she knew exactly who she was.

"Are you sure you want to make that promise, Mr. Vanderbilt?" Emily asked. Her voice didn't tremble; it was incredibly steady, laced with a sudden, unnatural calm.
