Chapter 4 - The Grandmother's Shock

The entire grand ballroom went breathlessly, terrifyingly silent. The only sound was the dramatic, sweeping music of the orchestra and the sharp click of Emily’s sensible black shoes snapping perfectly in time with the tango rhythm.

Grant was completely paralyzed, entirely forced to follow her blindingly fast, flawless footwork just to keep from falling over on the marble floor.

"What is she doing?!" Vanessa hissed from the sidelines, her cruel laughter completely replaced by genuine, panicked insecurity.

But Vanessa wasn't the one who mattered.

Sitting in a high-backed velvet chair in the background was Eleanor Vanderbilt. She was Grant’s eighty-something grandmother, the fierce, terrifyingly sharp matriarch of the family, wearing an elegant dark dress and a heavy diamond brooch.

An extreme, cinematic close-up captured Eleanor’s face.

The elderly matriarch slowly rose shakily from her chair. Her face was incredibly pale, her eyes wide with pure, unadulterated, breath-stealing shock.

She wasn't looking at the gray uniform. She was staring exclusively at the highly specific, incredibly complex tango footwork Emily was executing.
