Chapter 3 - The Glimmer of Silver

The two security guards immediately froze, releasing their brutal grip on Harper's arms. They took a terrified step back, lowering their heads in absolute submission to the mafia boss.

Harper stumbled forward, gasping for air as she clutched her bruised arms. She looked up through her messy, dark wavy hair, her realistic facial micro-expressions shifting from sheer pain to intense, calculating realization. She didn't know who this terrifying man in the black suit was, but she knew everyone in the room was deathly afraid of him.

Jackson Miller frantically rushed forward, practically shoving his own guests out of the way to reach Gideon. He pulled out a silk handkerchief, dabbing the cold sweat practically pouring down his forehead.

"Mr. Hayes! Gideon, please accept my deepest apologies," Jackson stammered, offering a sickeningly sweet, nervous smile. "This... this crazy vagrant managed to slip past security. She’s completely unhinged. She’s babbling nonsense about basements and dying women. We are removing the trash right now so you can enjoy the gala."

Gideon didn't blink. His expression remained completely cold, stunned, and intensely focused. He didn't even acknowledge Jackson's pathetic rambling.

His dark, piercing eyes were fixed entirely on Harper. More specifically, his gaze suddenly shifted upward, locking onto the messy, mud-caked strands of her dark hair.

Gideon’s broad chest stopped moving. He froze entirely.

Tucked deeply into the chaotic waves of Harper’s hair, catching the bright light of the crystal chandeliers above, was an antique silver hairpin. It was intricately carved into the shape of a silver wolf surrounded by delicate winter roses.
