Chapter 9 - The Rescue in the Dark

The convoy of armored SUVs tore through the night, arriving at the desolate, heavily guarded Miller Estate on the outskirts of the city. Gideon’s men didn't bother knocking. They drove a massive armored truck straight through the iron front gates, completely swarming the property in seconds.
Harper led Gideon through the decaying, hidden underground corridors of the facility. Her bare feet slapped against the cold concrete as they descended deeper into the dark, damp isolation wing that Jackson had kept entirely off the books.
They stopped in front of a heavy, rusted steel door at the very end of the hall.
Gideon’s chest heaved. The ruthless mafia boss, a man who had faced down rival cartels without blinking, was physically trembling as one of his men blew the heavy lock off the door with a suppressed shotgun blast.
The heavy steel door swung open, revealing a small, dimly lit concrete cell.
Sitting on a thin cot in the corner was a fragile, elderly woman with long, graying hair. She looked incredibly weak, her clothes worn and faded, but when she lifted her head, her deep eyes were identical to Gideon's.
She stared at the towering man standing in the doorway.
"My wolf," Josephine whispered, tears instantly spilling down her pale, weathered cheeks.
Gideon completely broke. The cold, impenetrable mafia facade violently shattered. He dropped to his knees on the filthy concrete floor, rushing forward and pulling his fragile mother into his massive arms. He buried his face in her shoulder, a heavy, agonizing sob tearing from his chest as twenty years of suppressed grief and lost time washed over him all at once.
