Chapter 5 - The Midnight Phone Call
Luca slowly stood up from the floor. He didn't take his eyes off Rosa.
“What do you mean?” Luca asked, his voice echoing with a dark, commanding authority.
Rosa reached into her cheap purse with trembling hands. She pulled out an old, cracked cell phone.
“Frank didn't die on the highway, Mr. Luca,” Rosa said, her voice cracking with raw emotion.
The entire dining room became so completely still you could hear a pin drop.
“The hospital told me the accident happened at 11:40 PM that night,” Rosa continued, clutching the phone to her chest.
Luca nodded slowly. “That's exactly what the police report says.”
“But Frank called me,” Rosa’s voice broke into a heavy sob. “He called me at midnight. Twenty minutes after he was supposedly dead on the highway. He said he was hurt, he was bleeding, and he was hiding inside your private garage.”
Vanessa suddenly bolted. She spun around on her expensive heels and moved rapidly toward the grand double doors of the dining room.
Luca didn't even turn his head. He just raised one finger.
“Daniel. Close the doors.”
Two massive, heavily armed security men immediately stepped forward, slamming the heavy mahogany doors shut and locking them from the inside. Vanessa slammed her hands against the wood, completely trapped.
Rosa began sobbing harder. “And before the call dropped... before the line went dead... I heard a woman telling someone to take his phone.”
Luca stared at the widow, his jaw locked so tight the muscles in his neck strained.
“Which woman, Rosa?” Luca demanded, the terrifying mafia boss fully awakening.
Rosa slowly raised her trembling hand. She pointed directly at the frantic, sweating woman trapped by the doors.
“Her, Mr. Luca,” Rosa cried out. “And Frank said she wasn't alone.”
Vanessa violently shook her head, tears of pure terror ruining her makeup. “She’s lying! She’s a crazy old woman! Luca, you can't believe her!”
