Chapter 2 - The Glass Doors

Renata took a terrified step backward as the heavy glass double doors were pulled open by the exterior security detail.

Lorenzo stepped into the grand marble foyer. He didn't yell. He didn't draw a weapon. The cinematic, restrained coldness of his demeanor was infinitely more terrifying than a shout. He carried an aura that suffocated all the oxygen in the massive room.

"Mr. Lorenzo," Renata stammered, her voice shaking uncontrollably as she desperately tried to force a welcoming smile. "You... you're home early from your business trip. Let me take your coat. Let me get Isabella some juice."

Lorenzo didn't hand her his coat. He gently set little Isabella down on the polished marble floor.

Pino immediately stepped in front of the little girl, a low, rumbling growl vibrating in the Doberman’s deep chest. The dog’s intelligent eyes were locked entirely on Renata, instinctively sensing the dark, malicious evil radiating from the maid in the black and white uniform.

"You aren't getting anything, Renata," Lorenzo said smoothly, unbuttoning his suit jacket.

Renata backed up against a gold-trimmed console table. She had run this mansion for ten years. She had always manipulated the staff, controlled the finances, and positioned herself as the untouchable matriarch of the household. She thought Lorenzo trusted her implicitly.

"Sir, I don't understand," Renata choked out, gripping the edge of the table to keep her knees from giving out. "Is something wrong? Did the staff fail to prepare the house for your arrival?"

"The house is perfect," Lorenzo replied, his dark eyes piercing right through her pathetic facade. "But I didn't just return from my business trip in New York, Renata. My jet landed three hours ago. I took a detour."

Renata stopped breathing.
