Chapter 6 - The Audio Confession

Lorenzo looked down at the sleek black device. He didn't hesitate. He pressed the illuminated play button, and the cinematic tension in the foyer reached an agonizing, suffocating peak.
A sharp hiss of static filled the quiet room, followed instantly by the crystal-clear sound of Renata’s own cruel, arrogant voice.
"The powder is planted," Renata's recorded voice echoed off the marble walls, dripping with venomous malice. "Make sure the bank transfers show her maiden name. When Lorenzo gets back from Miami, I want the evidence sitting on his desk."
A second voice, belonging to a corrupt former guard, answered on the tape. "What about the kid? If Clara leaves, she’ll try to take the girl."
"She isn't taking anything," Renata's audio played back coldly. "I will have the guards throw her onto the street with nothing but the clothes on her back. Lorenzo will be so blinded by the betrayal, he'll let me raise the child. By next year, I will have full control of his household accounts, and that pathetic street rat will be dead in a gutter."
The recording clicked off.
The silence that followed was absolute, terrifying, and dripping with imminent, inescapable violence.
Pino let out a vicious, snapping bark, lunging forward a single step.
Renata collapsed to her knees, her black and white maid uniform crumpling against the floor. The untouchable, manipulative matriarch of the household was completely, irreversibly ruined.

"Lorenzo, please!" Renata shrieked, crawling frantically across the polished marble, desperately reaching for his polished shoes. "It was the cartel! They threatened me! I had to do it to protect the estate!"
