Chapter 3 - The Broken Badge

Ethan took a step closer to the desk and caught sight of a piece of plastic lying on the plush carpet. He leaned down and picked it up.

It was a standard-issue cleaning staff badge. The name read: Maya Vance - Night Maintenance. But right across the mother's smiling photo was a thick, red sticker that read: FINAL WARNING - ZERO TOLERANCE.

The devastating realization hit the billionaire like a freight train. His own company, the empire he built on efficiency and strict protocols, had cultivated a middle-management culture so ruthlessly toxic that a six-year-old child was sneaking into the executive suite to protect her family’s livelihood.

Ethan looked up from the badge. "Your mother..." he began, his voice breathless and completely heartbroken. "Where is she?"

Nora finally stopped scrubbing. Her little arms dropped to her sides, the heavy rag slipping from her fingers. She slowly turned her head, looking up at the towering CEO. Her wide, brown eyes held a chilling, mature desperation that no child should ever possess.

"She fainted," Nora pleaded, her chin trembling as she bravely fought back a sob. "We can't lose our home again."

Ethan didn't say a word. He didn't offer a generic corporate apology.

He slowly dropped to one knee, ignoring the crease in his expensive navy suit, bringing himself down to her exact eye level. He reached out and gently took the dirty cleaning cloth out of her small, blistered hand.

"You're done working," Ethan said, his voice soft but ringing with absolute, unshakable resolve. "I'm going to fix this."
