Chapter 9 - The Trap Springs Shut

With a soft mechanical hum, the private side door connected to Ethan’s residential elevator slid open.
Valerie turned her head, expecting to see Ethan’s personal assistant bringing coffee. Instead, all the color instantly drained from her smug face.
Standing in the doorway was Maya. She was no longer wearing a filthy, oversized uniform. She wore a clean, soft cashmere sweater provided by the housekeeper. She looked rested, dignified, and totally unafraid. Standing right beside her, holding her mother’s hand, was little Nora in her yellow dress.
Valerie stumbled backward, her mouth opening and closing like a fish. "What... what is she doing up here?!"
Ethan stood up from his desk. The calm demeanor vanished, replaced by the terrifying, dominant presence of a billionaire who had caught a thief in his home.
"Maya is my guest," Ethan said, his voice dropping to a lethal, echoing volume. "The real question is, what are you doing here, Valerie?"
Valerie began to sweat profusely. "Ethan, this woman is a liar! She’s a lazy, incompetent worker who brought her filthy children into this building—"
"Shut up," Ethan commanded, snapping a thick Manila folder onto the marble desk. "I had my security team audit your accounts at 3:00 AM. Thirty-two ghost employees. Four hundred thousand dollars embezzled over six months. And a security camera in the basement that clearly shows you shoving an unconscious mother into an unventilated chemical closet."
Valerie’s legs gave out. She grabbed the edge of the desk to keep from collapsing to the floor. The arrogant tyrant was completely exposed.
"You didn't just steal from me," Ethan stepped around the desk, his towering presence completely engulfing her. "You tortured a family in my name. You threatened a child."
