Chapter 1 - The Abandoned Child

The emergency room waiting area of Chicago General Hospital was a chaotic, deafening sea of suffering. Under the harsh, flickering fluorescent lights, dozens of impatient people filled the rows of hard, blue plastic chairs. The reception desk was completely overwhelmed with ringing phones and shouting patients.

But amidst the chaotic blur of the busy hospital, one tiny, heartbreaking detail stood out.

Sitting entirely alone in the corner of the waiting room was an eight-year-old girl named Lucy. She wore a bright yellow sweater that looked far too large for her fragile frame. Her brown hair was tied into messy pigtails. She was clutching a worn, faded stuffed rabbit tightly against her chest, her small body shivering violently despite the warmth of the room.

Heavy, silent tears streamed down her pale, flushed cheeks.

Marianne, a thirty-nine-year-old veteran triage nurse wearing crisp teal scrubs and a stethoscope draped around her neck, was rushing past with a clipboard when she stopped dead in her tracks.

She looked around. No parents. No guardians. Just a sick, terrified little girl crying alone in one of the most dangerous places in the city.

Marianne’s deeply protective, compassionate instincts immediately took over. She slowly walked over and crouched down in front of the blue plastic chair, making sure not to startle the child.

Before Marianne could even introduce herself, Lucy looked up. Her eyes were glazed over with a dangerously high fever, but her voice was painfully, devastatingly clear.
