Chapter 7 - The Cancelled Insurance

Marianne stared at the glowing screen, her blood boiling with absolute disgust.
The email was an official confirmation notice. Three days ago, Vanessa had deliberately logged into the family's portal and entirely cancelled Lucy’s premium, top-tier private health insurance policy.
Attached to the email was a receipt showing a massive, prorated premium refund of nearly twelve thousand dollars being deposited directly into Vanessa’s personal offshore bank account.
The cinematic realization crashed over Marianne.
Vanessa hadn't just dumped Lucy in a crowded, underfunded public ER because she was in a hurry. She dumped her there because she had completely stripped the child of her medical coverage. She wanted Lucy to slip through the cracks. She wanted the little girl to be ignored by the overworked staff until it was too late.
And if Lucy died, Vanessa, as the current legal spouse, would inherit Captain Vance’s massive, multi-million-dollar military life insurance policy and the entirety of his estate.
It wasn't just neglect. It was attempted murder for financial gain.
The heavy surgical doors swung open down the hall. The surgeon walked out, pulling off his bloody mask, looking completely exhausted.
Marianne rushed forward. "Is she alive?"

"We removed the appendix and flushed the infection," the surgeon sighed heavily. "But the sepsis was severe. She is in a medically induced coma. The next twenty-four hours are critical."
