Chapter 10 - The Ultimate Justice

"David, please," Vanessa stammered, backing away toward the door, trembling with pure terror. "It's a misunderstanding! I was trying to save us money on the premiums! She's fine!"
David didn't yell. The terrifying restraint in his posture was absolute.
He didn't touch her. He simply raised his hand and motioned toward the hallway.
Two massive, heavily armed Military Police officers stepped into the ICU, flanked by local Chicago detectives.
"Vanessa Vance," the lead detective announced, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. "You are under arrest for felony child endangerment, medical neglect, insurance fraud, and attempted manslaughter."
"No! David, you can't do this to me!" Vanessa shrieked like a banshee, kicking and thrashing wildly.
The officers grabbed her arms, violently hauling her out of the room. Her designer trench coat tore as she was dragged away in absolute disgrace, her wealth, her freedom, and her luxurious lifestyle permanently destroyed.
The room fell into a beautiful, profound silence.
Suddenly, a tiny, weak groan came from the hospital bed.
David whipped around. Lucy’s eyes fluttered open. She looked at the towering man in the Navy uniform, and a bright, beautiful smile touched her lips.
"Daddy," Lucy whispered.
"I'm here, baby," David cried, burying his face in her shoulder. "Daddy is never leaving you again."

David turned to Marianne, tears of absolute gratitude in his eyes. He ensured she was publicly honored by the hospital board, and he personally hired her with a massive salary to be Lucy’s private pediatric nurse, bringing her into a family where she would be respected forever.
Do you think Vanessa deserved a longer sentence for attempted manslaughter, or is losing all her wealth and freedom enough justice?
