Chapter 9 - The Father's Arrival

Vanessa froze. All the color violently drained from her flawless face.

Standing in the doorway of the ICU was Captain David Vance. He was still wearing his crisp, heavily decorated Navy uniform. His boots were scuffed, his jaw was clenched tight, and his eyes burned with a cold, terrifying, and absolute cinematic fury.

The United States Navy had received the Red Cross emergency code and immediately authorized an emergency transport helicopter to fly him directly off his deployed vessel.

"David!" Vanessa gasped, completely dropping her arrogant facade. She stumbled backward, forcing fake tears into her eyes. "Oh my god, darling! I... I rushed back from my business trip as soon as I heard she was sick! The hospital wouldn't let me see her!"

David didn't even look at her. He marched past his wife completely, rushing directly to Lucy’s bedside.

The powerful, towering military captain dropped to his knees on the hospital floor. He gently picked up the faded stuffed rabbit and pressed it against his daughter's tiny hand, weeping openly as he kissed her pale forehead.

After a long, emotional moment, David slowly stood up. He turned around to face his wife.

Marianne didn't say a word. She simply reached into her scrub pocket and handed David the cell phone. The screen was open to the horrifying text messages, and the email confirming the cancelled medical insurance.
