Chapter 5 - The Medical Loophole

Marianne lowered the phone, her mind racing with pure, adrenaline-fueled desperation.
"Nurse!" the surgeon shouted from across the trauma bay. "Lucy’s blood pressure is crashing! Did you get verbal consent from the guardian?!"
Marianne looked at the little girl in the yellow sweater, who was now completely unconscious, clinging weakly to her stuffed rabbit. If they waited for a court order to intervene, Lucy would be dead within the hour.
Marianne made a split-second, incredibly risky decision.
"The guardian is unreachable," Marianne lied smoothly, her voice echoing with absolute, unwavering authority. "Under the state’s Good Samaritan and Emergency Life-Saving acts, we have implied medical consent for an unaccompanied minor facing imminent death. Take her to the OR. Now."
The surgeon nodded, immediately rushing Lucy's bed out of the room and sprinting toward the surgical wing.
Marianne stood alone in the empty trauma bay, her hands trembling. She had just bypassed legal protocol, risking her entire medical license and her career. But she didn't care.
She looked down at Lucy's phone still clutched in her hand.
Lucy had said her dad was "out at sea." Marianne quickly opened the photo gallery on the phone. She found a picture of a handsome, towering man hugging Lucy. He was wearing a crisp, white United States Navy uniform.
