Chapter 7 - The Burner Phone

"You can't do this to me!" Vanessa wept frantically, dropping to her knees on the marble altar. Tears and mascara ruined her flawless makeup. "I'll disappear! Just let us go! We'll never bother you again!"

Ethan looked down at her with absolute, unadulterated disgust.

One of the security contractors marched up the aisle, dragging the bearded man by the collar of his suit. The guard handed Ethan a sleek black burner phone he had confiscated from the man's pocket.

Ethan unlocked the phone. It was completely unprotected.

He opened the messaging app and read the most recent text, sent by Vanessa just ten minutes before she walked down the aisle.

“The drops are in my bouquet. I'll put them in his champagne during the toast. Have the car ready out back.”

Ethan looked at the beautiful bouquet of white roses Vanessa had dropped on the floor when the pin popped her belly. He nudged it with his polished black shoe. Hidden deep inside the floral arrangement was a tiny, clear glass vial of liquid.

"You didn't even want to wait for the honeymoon," Ethan stated softly, the terrifying reality of his near-death washing over him.

"Ethan, please! He forced me to do it!" Vanessa shrieked, instantly throwing her partner to the wolves. "He abused me! I was scared for my life!"

"Shut up, you stupid bitch!" the bearded man roared from the floor, struggling against the guards.
