Chapter 2 - The First Words

The cinematic tension in the grand ballroom spiked to a paralyzing level.
Luca Morelli was the absolute ruler of the city's underworld, but his one and only vulnerability was his mother. A year ago, a massive stroke had left her entirely paralyzed on her right side and completely nonverbal. Isabella, his ambitious fiancée, had eagerly taken over the estate, isolating the old woman while pretending to be a devoted caregiver.
"Luca, darling," Isabella purred, walking gracefully over to him and placing a manicured hand on his broad shoulder. "The maid is just making up stories. Your mother is exhausted. She needs to go to bed."
Luca didn't even look at Isabella. His dark, piercing eyes remained locked on his mother's frail form in the wheelchair.
I took a deep breath, terrified of the powerful man, but absolutely determined to protect the woman I cared for.
"She spoke to me in the hallway, Mr. Morelli," I stated firmly, refusing to back down.
Isabella’s face violently flushed with pure, demonic rage. She opened her mouth to scream for security to throw me out.
But she never got the chance.
Mrs. Morelli slowly, painfully reached out with her functioning left hand. She didn't reach for her son. She gently grabbed my trembling hand, squeezing it with a fierce, surprising strength.
The entire ballroom went completely, deafeningly silent.
Mrs. Morelli looked directly at the towering mafia boss. She took a slow, rattling breath, forcing her vocal cords to work for the first time in twelve agonizing months.
"I... need... Luca," Mrs. Morelli whispered, her voice incredibly soft, but absolutely clear.
