Chapter 3 - The Hidden Bruises

Luca knocked his heavy wooden chair backward, completely abandoning his cold, intimidating persona.
He rushed across the ballroom and dropped to his knees right in front of the wheelchair, his tattooed hands gently taking his mother’s fragile face. Tears instantly welled in his dark eyes.
"Mom?" Luca choked out, his voice cracking with raw emotion. "You can speak?"
"I... I can," she whispered, tears spilling down her wrinkled cheeks.
"It's a miracle!" Isabella shrieked falsely, rushing over with a wide, theatrical smile, desperately trying to control the narrative. "Oh, Luca, the doctors were wrong! The expensive therapies I booked for her actually worked!"
Isabella reached out to touch Mrs. Morelli’s shoulder.
Mrs. Morelli violently flinched. She shrank back into the wheelchair, her eyes wide with sheer, paralyzing terror as Isabella’s hand came near her.
Luca froze. The cinematic realism of his realization was suffocating. He didn't miss a single micro-expression. The terrifying apex predator within him instantly awakened.
He looked at Isabella, then looked back at his mother.
"Why did you flinch, Mom?" Luca asked softly, his voice dropping into a lethal, dangerous register.
Mrs. Morelli didn't answer. Her hands were shaking too violently.
I couldn't stay silent anymore. I had sworn to protect her.
"Show him, Mrs. Morelli," I whispered, gently encouraging her.
