Chapter 5 - The Mafia Betrayal

"You couldn't have kept us safe, Dominic," Elena replied coldly, her voice echoing perfectly across the marble room. "Because the threat wasn't coming from the Rossi family. It was coming from inside your own house."

Dominic frowned, his jaw clenching tight. "What are you talking about?"

Elena took a deep, shaky breath, tightly gripping the hands of her terrified sons.

"The night I left," Elena explained, her voice trembling with the memory of pure terror, "I was standing in the hallway outside your father's study. I heard your Underboss, Silvio, talking to your father. They knew I was pregnant. And they explicitly agreed that a family would make you too weak to lead the syndicate."

Dominic stopped breathing. The air in the opulent bathroom instantly dropped ten degrees.

"Silvio promised your father he would handle the 'problem' quietly before the baby was born," Elena choked out, tears of absolute panic welling in her eyes. "He was going to kill me, Dominic! Your own Underboss was going to murder your children to ensure you remained a ruthless, isolated boss. So I packed a bag and I ran. And I never looked back."

The cinematic realism of the absolute, crushing betrayal completely paralyzed the terrifying mafia boss.

He hadn't lost the love of his life because she stopped loving him. He had lost her because his own trusted inner circle had actively plotted to assassinate a pregnant woman just to protect their criminal profits.

Silvio was still his Underboss. Silvio was sitting out in the dining room right now, waiting to celebrate Dominic’s fake, strategic engagement to the Rossi family.
