Chapter 1 - Get Your Foot Off Her

Celeste pressed the red sole of her heel into Mara’s pregnant belly in the middle of the hospital corridor.

Not a kick.

That would have looked uncontrolled.

This was worse.

A slow, cruel, deliberate press.

Mara was already down on one knee, one hand flat against the polished floor, the other wrapped around the side of her swollen abdomen. Her white maternity dress was stained with spilled coffee. Her cardigan had slipped from one shoulder. Her dark hair stuck to her tear-wet face.

The coffee cup rolled away from her and bumped against the base of the reception desk.

Nurses froze.

A young mother pulled her child closer.

An elderly patient in a wheelchair whispered, “Oh my God.”

Celeste stood over Mara in a cream designer coat, diamond earrings flashing under the hospital lights, blonde hair falling perfectly over one shoulder.

Her face was beautiful.

Her voice was poison.

“Finish your job, surrogate.”

Mara gasped and folded forward, pain cutting through her body.

Behind Celeste, Evan stood in a fitted black suit with a folded document in his hand.

Mara looked up at him through tears.

“Evan,” she pleaded. “Stop her.”

His jaw tightened.

For one second, Mara saw discomfort in his eyes.

Not love.

Not horror.

Only inconvenience.

Then he lifted the folded amended agreement slightly.

“You should’ve signed.”

The sentence broke something in her that the pain had not.

Celeste smiled.

She thought the corridor belonged to her because Evan had told her it would.

Then a hand closed around her ankle.

Strong.

Sudden.

Absolute.

Celeste’s eyes widened as her foot was pulled away from Mara’s body.

She stumbled half a step but stayed upright.

A man in a white medical coat moved between them in one decisive motion.

Dr. Adrian Vale.

Silver hair.

Dark suit beneath the coat.

Stethoscope against his chest.

The kind of doctor whose presence changed a room before he spoke.

“Get your foot off her,” he said, voice thundering but controlled. “Now.”

Celeste spun toward him, ready to argue.

Then she saw his face.

The cruelty drained from hers.

Evan saw him too.

The agreement lowered in his hand.

His posture stiffened.

Hospital staff straightened without being told.

Two nurses rushed forward, then stopped just behind Dr. Vale as if waiting for his command.

Mara looked up.

For a moment, pain blurred his face.

Then recognition cut through it.

Her lips parted.

“Adrian…”

The doctor dropped to one knee beside her.

He removed his white coat and wrapped it around her shoulders with hands that trembled despite his effort to control them.

“Mara,” he whispered.

Not Mrs. Mercer.

Not patient.

Mara.

His daughter’s name.

Celeste took one step back.

Evan’s face turned pale.

Dr. Vale checked Mara’s face, then her abdomen, his jaw tightening with every shaking breath she took.

Mara clutched his sleeve.

“She pressed on him,” she whispered. “She pressed on my baby.”

Dr. Vale lifted his eyes.

The corridor went silent.

Celeste stared between them.

Only now did she understand.

The pregnant woman she had called a surrogate was not alone.

She had not humiliated some disposable wife in a hospital hallway.

May you like

She had put her heel on Adrian Vale’s daughter.

And the hospital around her belonged to him.
