Adrian noticed.
“Pain?”
She shook her head.
“Memory.”
He nodded.
“Do you want to leave?”
Mara looked toward the glass doors leading back inside.
The corridor was beyond them.
Bright.
Busy.
Ordinary.
“No,” she said. “Not yet.”
Oliver squealed.
Adrian handed the toy back.
Mara leaned into the sunlight.
For once, the hospital did not feel like the place where everything nearly ended.
It felt like the place where someone finally stepped between her and harm.
Late.
