Chapter 5 - Evidence Instead of a Trap

Evan requested to see her twice.

Mara refused both times.

He sent a message through a nurse.

Mara asked the nurse to read it aloud.

The nurse hesitated.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

The nurse read:

Mara, this has gotten out of hand. Celeste made a terrible mistake, but we can still handle this privately. Think of our son. Think of what public scandal will do to him. I am willing to pause the agreement if you cooperate.

Mara laughed.

It hurt.

She laughed anyway.

“Pause the agreement?”

Adrian’s face turned to stone.

Mara looked at the nurse.

“Tell security he is not permitted near me.”

The nurse nodded.

“And the message?”

Mara took a breath.

“Save it.”

Adrian looked at her.

“Evidence?”

“Yes.”

His eyes softened.

“You always were your mother’s daughter.”

Mara looked at him.

“What does that mean?”

“She saved receipts for emotional reasons and legal ones.”

Mara smiled despite herself.

“I remember.”

By evening, the hospital had separated into two realities.

Publicly, a pregnant patient had been assaulted in a corridor and was being monitored.

Privately, the hospital’s executive office had frozen all visitor access, preserved security footage, logged witness statements, and placed Evan’s unsigned amended agreement into secure custody after he dropped it during an argument with Celeste.

Dr. Adrian Vale did not reveal ownership.

He did not need to.

Authority moved through the building around him like electricity.

Celeste understood that too late.

She tried to leave.

Security allowed her to exit only after documenting her identity, witness statements, and video preservation notices.

She called Evan from the parking garage.

He did not answer.

That was when she realized he would sacrifice her first.

Men like Evan always promise partnership until blame becomes expensive.

Celeste eventually gave a statement.

Not out of conscience.

Out of self-preservation.

She said Evan told her Mara was “acting as a surrogate in practice” because the child’s future belonged to him and the Mercer line.

She said he promised Mara would sign.

She said he told her Dr. Vale and Mara were estranged, that no one in the hospital would interfere, that Mara was emotionally unstable and needed pressure.

Pressure.

That was the word she used for putting a heel against a pregnant woman.

The investigator wrote it down without expression.

Mara stayed in the hospital for four days.

The baby remained safe.

She named him Oliver Adrian Mercer on the paperwork at first.

Then stopped before signing.

The clerk waited.

Mara stared at the surname.

Mercer.

Evan’s name.

The name attached to the agreement.

The threat.

The hallway.

She looked at her father.

“Can I leave it blank?”

The clerk said gently, “You can complete it later.”

Mara nodded.

Adrian said nothing.

That was how she knew he was trying.

May you like

Old Adrian would have suggested Vale.

New Adrian kept his mouth shut and sat beside her.
