Chapter 7 - Family Means Answering

One afternoon, while Oliver slept on Adrian’s chest, Mara asked, “Would you have come if I wasn’t hurt?”

Adrian looked down at the baby.

“I don’t know.”

She appreciated the truth, even though it hurt.

He continued.

“I like to believe I would have become brave without a crisis. But my history argues against me.”

Mara sat with that.

Then said, “Don’t make me need a crisis again.”

He nodded.

“I won’t.”

Trust returned slowly.

Not as daughter forgiving father because he intervened once.

But as two people learning how to remain after damage.

Mara went back to the corridor six months later.

Not because she wanted to.

Because avoidance had turned that hallway into a monster.

Adrian offered to walk with her.

She said yes.

They stood near the reception desk where the coffee had spilled.

Where Celeste’s heel had pressed down.

Where Evan had held the agreement.

Where Adrian’s hand had pulled danger away.

The floor was spotless now.

Hospitals are good at cleaning surfaces.

Mara looked at the tile.

“I thought he would stop her.”

Adrian said nothing.

“I really did. Even then.”

Her voice broke.

“I thought if I said his name, he’d remember I was his wife.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“He remembered exactly what you were. That was the problem.”

Mara looked at him.

He continued.

“To him, wife meant access. Child meant leverage. Family meant ownership.”

She looked back at the polished floor.

“And to you?”

Adrian swallowed.

“Family means answering when called. Even late.”

Mara nodded.

“Good answer.”

“Your mother would’ve said it needed editing.”

Mara laughed.

May you like

“She would.”

They stood there until the hallway became a hallway again.
