Chapter 10 - Evelyn Was Hiding More Than Her Son’s Temper
The next morning, Maren did not stay in the main bedroom.
She slept in a guest suite with the door locked and Judith nearby.
By sunrise, she had called her attorney.
By eight, she had requested copies of every trust-related document Garrett had touched in the last year.
By nine, she learned something disturbing.
Two unsigned draft authorizations had been prepared by the Whitlock family office, both concerning advisory access and transfer-routing options related to one segment of Maren’s maternal holdings.
The signatures were blank.
But the instructions had clearly been prepared in anticipation of her approval.
Approval she had never given.
When Maren asked who requested the drafts, the family office administrator hesitated.
Then admitted:
“Mrs. Whitlock senior reviewed them first.”
Evelyn.
So Judith had been right.
Evelyn’s role was not passive.
She had not merely anticipated Garrett’s cruelty.
She had been involved in the financial pressure campaign that made Judith a problem in the first place.
Maren sat with that information for a long time.
Then she called Judith and said, “Mom… she wasn’t just covering for him.”
Judith replied, “I know.”
“How long have you known?”
