Chapter 14 - Maren Took Her Name Back Before the Divorce Was Final

Two weeks later, Maren moved out of the Whitlock mansion entirely.

Judith wanted her to come home.

Maren did for a while.

Then she rented her own place near her design office and began the work of rebuilding something she should never have abandoned: a life not organized around Garrett’s moods.

She resumed using Lane in professional settings.

Then legally petitioned to restore her name fully.

It wasn’t just symbolic.

It was stabilizing.

Every form she signed felt like evidence to herself.

I am no longer inside that house.

I am no longer asking those people for permission to exist.

The separation became public in exactly the circles Garrett had hoped to impress that night.

The story spread in distorted fragments at first.

There was gossip about a fountain.

A broken banquet table.

A ring thrown in public.

But beneath all the noise, the truth stayed solid.

Garrett had put his hands on Judith.

Maren had defended her mother.

And Evelyn had known far more than she admitted.
