Chapter 6 - Maren Finally Understood Why Garrett Married Her
There are truths a woman only allows herself to face once everything is already burning.
Maren married Garrett because he was charismatic, polished, and persuasive in exactly the ways she had once confused with safety.
He admired her intelligence.
Praised her poise.
Told her she was different from the women around him.
What she missed was this:
Garrett never really loved resistance.
He loved access.
He loved the appearance of a beautiful wife from a respectable family.
He loved the prestige of Judith Lane’s late father’s old-money holdings being adjacent to his own name.
He loved the idea that, eventually, he could influence where Maren’s inherited authority landed.
Whenever finances came up, Garrett became deeply interested.
Whenever Maren spoke about keeping her maternal family trust separate, he became offended.
“You’re my wife.”
“Yes.”
“That means we build together.”
“That doesn’t mean you control what my father left me.”
Those conversations always ended badly.
Now Judith’s account reframed everything.
The contempt.
The pressure.
The anger.
And tonight’s violence.
Garrett had not shoved Judith only because she challenged him.
