Chapter 8 - The Ring on the Table Wasn’t the End of the Marriage Yet

Maren had thrown her wedding ring onto Garrett’s chest in the ballroom.

But once the confrontation moved into private rooms, the real decision became heavier.

Ending a marriage in anger is one thing.

Ending it while knowing the man you married may have been maneuvering around your inheritance is something else entirely.

Garrett seemed to sense her hesitation.

He softened his voice.

“Maren, don’t do something impulsive because of your mother.”

That was how he always worked.

Act first.

Reframe second.

Blame third.

Then offer calm as if he were the reasonable one.

“We can fix this,” he said.

Judith whispered, “No, you can’t.”

Garrett ignored her and looked only at his wife.

“You know me.”

Maren’s answer surprised even herself.

“That’s exactly why I’m done.”

Silence.

Evelyn drew herself up. “You are overreacting.”

Maren laughed bitterly.

“You stood there tonight like you were waiting for it to happen.”

Evelyn didn’t answer.

Garrett tried one last move.

“If you walk out over this, you walk out of this family.”

Maren stared at him.

Then at Evelyn.

Then back at Garrett.

“You mean the family that watched you put hands on my mother?”

His expression hardened again.

And that was when Maren knew there was nothing left to salvage.
