Chapter 5 - The Cruel Taunt

Medium shot: Daniel was kneeling on the hard, linoleum floor right beside the hospital bed.
He was a man in his late thirties, his dark, styled hair slightly messy, a heavy shadow of stubble darkening his jawline. He wore a simple, elegant cream-colored tailored suit jacket over an unbuttoned white shirt, an expensive luxury watch gleaming subtly on his wrist.
He ignored the arrogant, noisy intrusion of the three boys entirely. His entire universe was completely, singularly focused on the woman in the bed.
Daniel leaned forward, his broad shoulders shaking slightly as he gently, with infinite tenderness, lifted Emma’s heavily wrapped, blood-stained hand. He pressed it softly against his lips, kissing her bruised knuckles with an overwhelming, agonizing grief that seemed to suck all the air out of the brightly lit room.
In the immediate background, the three rich boys stood in their expensive blazers, laughing cruelly and pointing at the medical equipment keeping her alive, utterly devoid of any human empathy.
Standing silently by the heavy glass door were two large men in dark suits and dark sunglasses. They were elite, highly paid private bodyguards hired by the boys' billionaire fathers specifically to protect the arrogant kids from any angry reporters or family members at the hospital.

There was no dialogue from the grieving husband. There was only the steady, alarming, rhythmic beep of the medical monitor tracking Emma's fragile heartbeat, contrasting sickeningly with the toxic, mocking laughter of the boys who had destroyed her.
