Chapter 6 - The Awakening

Close-up: Tight shot on Daniel’s face.

Heavy, silent tears continued to stream down his cheeks, soaking into his stubble as he held his wife's broken hand against his face. He felt the coldness of her skin. He heard the mechanical hiss of the ventilator forcing air into her crushed lungs.

And in that exact, crystal-clear fraction of a second, Daniel realized that the polite, legal justice system had been completely bought and paid for. He realized that begging for help, filing lawsuits, and playing by the rules would never, ever bring the people who hurt his wife to justice.

The tears abruptly stopped.

Daniel's expression underwent a terrifying, tectonic shift. The profound, agonizing grief that had consumed him for three days instantly, violently evaporated into the sterile hospital air. It was entirely replaced by a dark, frozen, and absolutely lethal rage.

The muscles in his jaw clenched so tightly the bone seemed ready to snap. His dark eyes, previously filled with warm, devastating sorrow, turned into unyielding, unforgiving black ice. The quiet, gentle antique bookstore owner died completely in that exact moment.
