Chapter 3 - The Cruel Estate Manager

At exactly 5:30 AM, the heavy service doors of the mansion swung open.
Vincent stood perfectly still in the shadows of the second-floor balcony, looking down at the grand foyer. He hadn't slept a single minute.
Carmen walked in. She was a frail, exhausted woman in a faded gray uniform. Her hands were raw and blistered, and a deep, rattling cough violently shook her thin frame. She immediately grabbed a heavy bucket and began scrubbing the marble stairs on her hands and knees.
A moment later, the sharp, aggressive clicking of designer heels echoed through the hall.
It was Silvia, the Head Estate Manager. She wore a pristine, expensive silk blouse and a gold watch that cost more than a car. She sneered as she looked down at the coughing maid.
"You missed a spot, you filthy rat," Silvia hissed, kicking Carmen’s bucket and splashing dirty water all over the maid’s uniform.
Carmen gasped, quickly grabbing a rag to dry the floor. "I'm sorry, Ms. Silvia. I'll fix it immediately."
"You're pathetic," Silvia sneered, writing something down on her clipboard. "You're too slow, Carmen. I'm docking your pay again this week. That's another two hundred dollars gone for incompetence."
Carmen froze. Panic completely washed over her pale face. She dropped the rag and looked up, her eyes filled with sheer, desperate terror.
"Please, Ms. Silvia, no!" Carmen begged, her voice cracking. "You docked my pay last week! If you take another two hundred, I won't have enough for my medication. My daughter needs—"
"I don't care about your brat!" Silvia snapped viciously, leaning down to get in the maid's face. "You should be grateful I don't fire you right now. If you say one more word, I'll make sure you never work in this city again."
