Chapter 8 - The King's Wrath

The voice wasn't loud, but it carried the devastating force of an earthquake.
Marco froze. He slowly turned his head.
Standing at the end of the hallway was Vincent. He didn't look like a businessman anymore. He looked like the apex predator who had conquered the city's criminal underworld. His dark eyes were fixed entirely on his lieutenant.
"Boss," Marco said quickly, keeping his gun raised. "I caught her red-handed. She’s stealing your jewelry. I'm just handling the trash like you taught me."
"I said," Vincent repeated, his voice dropping to a terrifying, dead calm, "put the gun down."
Marco hesitated, a bead of sweat rolling down his temple. Reluctantly, he lowered the weapon.
Vincent walked slowly down the hall. He stopped between Marco and the sobbing maid. He looked at the Rolex on the floor, then looked directly into Silvia’s panicked eyes.
"It's funny," Vincent said smoothly. "I haven't worn that watch in three years. It's been locked in a safe that only my Estate Manager has the combination to."
Silvia’s face drained of all color. She began to violently shake. "Sir, I... she must have guessed the code! She's a thief!"
Vincent ignored her. He turned slightly toward the shadows of the grand staircase.
"Isabella," Vincent called out softly. "Come here, sweetheart."
From behind the marble pillar, the tiny eight-year-old girl stepped out, clutching the empty green plastic container. She ran straight to her mother, throwing her small arms around Carmen's neck as they cried together.
Vincent pointed at Silvia. "Isabella, who is that lady?"

The little girl sniffled, pointing a tiny finger at the sweating manager. "That's the mean lady who takes Mommy's money. I heard her telling that scary man they were going to make us disappear."
