Chapter 4 - The Ledger of Lies

"Is there a problem down here?"

Vincent’s deep, terrifying voice echoed through the massive foyer, instantly freezing the air in the room.

Silvia gasped, spinning around. The cruel, arrogant smirk completely vanished from her face. She immediately plastered on a fake, overly sweet smile as the boss slowly descended the grand staircase.

"Good morning, Mr. Torino!" Silvia chirped nervously. "No problem at all! I was just reminding Carmen to be more thorough. You know how lazy the help can be."

Vincent didn't look at Silvia. He walked straight past her and stopped in front of Carmen. The exhausted maid was violently trembling, staring at the floor, terrified to even make eye contact with the most dangerous man in the state.

"Stand up, Carmen," Vincent commanded gently.

Carmen slowly got to her feet, clutching her wet, dirty apron.

"How much are you getting paid a week?" Vincent asked, his eyes narrowing as he noticed how genuinely sick she looked.

Before Carmen could speak, Silvia violently interjected. "She gets the standard rate, sir! We don't need to bother you with trivial payroll matters—"

"I didn't ask you," Vincent snapped, his voice barely above a whisper, but laced with enough lethal intent to make Silvia physically step back. He looked back at Carmen. "Answer me."

"Four hundred dollars, sir," Carmen whispered, tears welling in her eyes. "But Ms. Silvia usually takes half for... for uniform fees and mistakes."

Vincent felt a cold fury erupt in his chest. The base pay for his maids was twelve hundred dollars a week, plus full medical benefits.

Vincent slowly turned his head to look at the sweating estate manager.

"Silvia," Vincent said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "Bring the staff payroll ledgers to my office. Right now."
