Chapter 5 - The Ultrasound Pocket

"Abigail..." Julian choked out, reaching out a trembling hand, terrified that if he moved too fast, she would vanish like a mirage. "Is it really you?"
Abigail couldn't speak. The dam broke, and she sobbed openly, nodding her head as she buried her face in her hands.
As she lifted her hands to her face, the corner of a folded piece of glossy paper slipped halfway out of the front pocket of her brown apron. The bright white medical light hit it, revealing the undeniable gray outlines of a developing fetus.
An ultrasound sonogram photo.
Julian’s eyes caught the paper instantly. The emotional warmth in his face violently vanished, replaced by a dark, protective, terrifying storm of protective rage.
He didn't see a waitress anymore. He saw his baby sister—exhausted, pregnant, working on her feet for minimum wage in a glittering ballroom while arrogant snobs spat on her.
"Who did this to you?" Julian demanded, his voice dropping into a demonic, icy whisper that chilled the entire gala to its core. "Who put you in this uniform? Who got you pregnant and left you like this?"
Abigail shook her head, sobbing harder. "I... I can't say. He'll ruin me. He's powerful."
