Chapter 8 - The Lie Exposed

I stood frozen against my desk, trembling violently from the adrenaline.
Leandro took off his heavy wool coat and gently draped it over my shaking shoulders. "Are you hurt, Clare?"
"No," I whispered, pulling the warm coat tighter. "How did you know he was going to kill me?"
"Because my cyber-team has been monitoring the Harkort servers for two weeks," Leandro explained, his voice deep and soothing. "I knew they were embezzling money. I was just waiting for the right moment to dismantle them. But when my team flagged that you had accessed the hidden ledgers tonight, I knew Wesley would panic. I tore through the city to get to you."
I looked up at his scarred face. "Why? I thought you were marrying Blair to secure the merger. Why would you risk everything for me?"
Leandro’s dark eye widened in absolute, profound confusion. "Marrying Blair? Who told you that?"
"She did," I choked out, tears finally spilling down my cheeks. "At the gala. After we danced. She said the entire evening was just a joke to mock me, and that you two were secretly engaged."
The cinematic tension in the office completely shifted. Leandro’s jaw locked, his hands clenching into tight, violent fists.
