Chapter 4 - The Cruel Stepfather

Mack carefully set the letter down. He looked at Eli, who was still staring at the old photograph of his grandfather.
“Did you really know my grandpa?” Eli asked, his voice filled with hope.
“He saved my life, Eli,” Mack said softly. “And now, I’m going to save yours.”
Mack signaled to Eli’s mother. Sarah hesitated, terrified of the massive bikers, but she slowly walked over, wrapping her arms protectively around her son.
“Sit down, ma'am,” Mack ordered gently, sliding over to make room in the booth. “Who gave you that bruise?”
Sarah flinched, tears instantly spilling down her face. “My… my husband. Vince. Eli’s stepfather.”
The bikers went completely rigid.
“When my dad got sick, Vince took over his estate,” Sarah sobbed, her voice trembling with sheer terror. “He forced Dad to sign over the power of attorney while he was heavily medicated. The day after Dad’s funeral, Vince kicked us out of the house. He drained the bank accounts. He kept all of Dad’s heirlooms and threw us onto the street. When I tried to call the police, he beat me and threatened to tell child services I was a drug addict so they’d take Eli away.”
Mack’s hands balled into massive fists. Walter Turner was the most honorable man he had ever known, and some greedy, abusive parasite was currently sitting in his house, torturing his family.
“Have you eaten today, Eli?” Mack asked, his voice dangerously calm.
Eli shook his head. “No, sir.”
Mack pushed his own untouched plate away and handed Eli a menu. “Order whatever you want, kid. Get a giant cheeseburger.”

As Eli eagerly looked at the menu, Mack turned Walter’s letter over. There was one final paragraph written on the back. It was a secret request involving all the men at the table, pointing to a place they had sworn they would never return to.
