Chapter 2 - The Toxic Husband

The background guests began to notice the commotion, staring in shock as Elisa hyperventilated on the floor.
Michael examined the hidden box grimly. It wasn't a toy. It wasn't a joke. It was a high-grade, motion-activated digital audio recorder.
He looked at his sister. Elisa’s hands were shaking so violently she could barely hold her purse. She had been married to Robert for six years. Robert was a highly successful, wealthy orthopedic surgeon who presented himself to the world as a flawless, generous family man.
But behind closed doors, Robert was a terrifying, deeply paranoid narcissist who controlled every single aspect of Elisa's life.
"Elisa," Michael whispered, keeping his voice low. "Did you know this was under the chair?"
"No," Elisa choked out, tears spilling down her cheeks. "But he’s been acting insane for months, Michael. He monitors my phone. He tracks my car. Last week, he accused me of having an affair with the landscaper just because I offered the man a glass of water. If Robert finds out we found this..."
Michael’s jaw locked. He had never liked Robert, but he had no idea the emotional abuse had escalated to the point of bugging their own dining room.
"I'm taking it," Michael stated firmly, slipping the black box into the pocket of his dark blue sweater. "I'm going to pull the audio files. If he's illegally recording you in your own home, we can use it to get a restraining order."
"No!" Elisa panicked, grabbing his arm. "He will destroy me! He has all the money, Michael. He told me if I ever try to leave him, he will frame me for drug possession and take full custody of Sophia."
Before Michael could respond, the heavy front doors of the house swung open.
"Well, well, well! Merry Christmas to my beautiful family!"
