Chapter 5 - The Deadly Confession

The crystal-clear audio file played directly through Michael’s phone speaker, ringing loudly through the dead-silent dining room.
It wasn't a recording of Elisa.
It was a recording of Robert, speaking on the phone late at night when the rest of the house was completely quiet.
"I told you, the dosage needs to be doubled," Robert's recorded voice hissed angrily. "If she doesn't sign the life insurance policy by Friday, I want her heavily sedated. Just mix the fentanyl patches into her night cream. It will look like an accidental overdose. The coroner is a golf buddy of mine, he won't look too closely."
The recording clicked off.
The silence that followed was absolute, terrifying, and dripping with imminent, inescapable justice.
Elisa covered her mouth, dropping to her knees in pure, unadulterated horror. Her husband hadn't been tracking her because he was jealous. He was tracking her to calculate the perfect time to murder her for a massive insurance payout.
The background guests were completely paralyzed.
"He... he was trying to kill me," Elisa choked out, pulling little Sophia tightly against her chest.
Robert backed away, his hands shaking violently. The arrogant, wealthy surgeon realized his entire life had just violently collapsed into dust. He had bugged his own dining room to spy on his wife, completely forgetting to turn off the recorder while he plotted her assassination over the phone with a black-market dealer.
"That... that's a deep fake!" Robert shrieked hysterically, desperately trying to salvage his shattered reality. "Michael faked that audio to ruin me! I am a respected doctor!"

"You're a monster," Michael replied, completely devoid of human empathy.
