The vibration of the smartphone in Claire’s hand was subtle, but in her mind, it sounded like a bomb going off.

A tight close-up captured Claire glancing down at the glowing screen.

It was a highly encrypted, urgent text message from her lead corporate attorney. The insert shot of the screen displayed exactly four devastating words:

“BOTH TRANSACTIONS COMPLETE.”

A wave of profound, absolute peace washed over Claire. The divorce was final. Her legal ties to Julian were completely severed. And the two massive, lethal financial maneuvers she had been secretly orchestrating for six months were officially executed.

Claire looked up from her screen. The natural, slow movement of her eyes shifted from the phone directly to her former mother-in-law.

A small, incredibly controlled, chillingly calculated smile touched the corners of Claire’s mouth.

Vivian Ashford’s arrogant face twisted in pure annoyance. She hated seeing Claire look anything other than completely devastated.
