Chapter 3 - The Cold Pavement

The heavy oak doors slammed shut with a deafening boom, echoing like a gunshot in the night. The golden light from the mansion vanished, plunging Elena into complete, terrifying darkness.

She was completely alone. The freezing rain battered her fragile body, soaking her thin dress so thoroughly it clung to her skin like ice. She wrapped her arms securely around her heavy belly, curling into a tight ball on the wet gravel to protect her unborn baby from the bitter cold.

Her tears mixed with the torrential rain. She had given up everything for Richard. When they met, she had told him she was just a normal girl from a working-class background because she desperately wanted a man who loved her for who she was, not for what she had. She had played the role of the humble, submissive, grateful wife perfectly. And he had used her, abused her trust, and thrown her away the moment he found a shinier toy.

As Elena lay trembling on the freezing pavement, the despair began to fade. The heartbroken, weeping girl slowly died right there on the gravel.

In her place, a deep, burning, and utterly lethal anger began to ignite. He called her a pathetic orphan. He called her a gold digger. He forged medical documents to declare her child a bastard.

He had no idea who she really was.
