Chapter 2 - The Stolen Trust

My father, Richard Hale, absolutely loved an audience.
He had publicly humiliated me at Christmas dinners, corporate holiday parties, charity galas, and family birthdays for my entire life. But tonight, he had finally found his perfect, ultimate stage: my sister’s lavish, over-the-top Chicago wedding.
A wedding that was entirely paid for with money he explicitly swore he never had.
Vanessa lifted her chin, looking down at me from the head table. “You really should have told me you were coming alone, Emma. I could have seated you with the photographers in the back so you wouldn't feel so awkward.”
“I’m fine right here,” I replied, my voice quiet but remarkably steady.
My father laughed again, taking a large gulp of his imported champagne. “Still proud. Still pretending you're too good for us.”
The panicked wedding planner hurried toward me, clearly embarrassed by the hostility. “Miss Hale, I apologize. Your assigned seat is at Table 42, near the kitchen doors.”
“Of course it is,” I said softly.
As I walked slowly past the elite, front-row tables, the sheer, staggering scale of the wealth hit me. I saw towering, ten-foot floral arrangements of rare orchids. I saw bottles of Dom Pérignon on ice. I saw gold-leaf menus embossed with Vanessa’s initials. Every single luxurious detail in the room screamed of limitless wealth.
It was my wealth.
My grandmother had left me a massive, multi-million-dollar trust before she died. Because I was only twenty-two at the time, my father was legally appointed to control the portfolio until I turned twenty-eight.
When my twenty-eighth birthday finally arrived, I demanded full access.

My father had sat me down in his office, completely unbothered, and told me it was entirely gone. He claimed bad investments, staggering legal fees, and "family obligations" had wiped out the principal. He told me I was broke.
👉 I had believed his lies and wept for a week, and then I decided to change my entire career path.
