Chapter 4 - The Arrival

The heavy, suffocating applause for my father was suddenly interrupted.

The massive double doors of the grand ballroom didn't just open; they swung wide with a heavy, authoritative thud that instantly commanded the attention of every single person in the room.

The cold Chicago wind whipped into the warm ballroom.

Stepping through the threshold was not a lost photographer. It was a towering, heavily muscular man in his late thirties. He wore a flawless, custom-tailored charcoal suit that screamed of quiet, dangerous wealth. He had dark, intense eyes, a sharp jawline, and a commanding presence that immediately made the entire room feel ten degrees colder.

Following closely behind him were four men in sharp black suits, wearing earpieces—a private, elite security detail.

The string quartet aggressively fumbled their notes, completely stopping the music.

My father, Richard Hale, was still standing at the VIP table with his champagne glass raised. He looked toward the doors.

All the color violently drained from his face. The smug, arrogant smile completely collapsed, replaced by a look of sheer, breathless panic. He gripped the edge of the white tablecloth so hard his knuckles turned white.

Vanessa’s jaw physically dropped. "Who... who is that?" she whispered, her perfectly contoured face twisting in sudden confusion.

The man didn't look at my father. He didn't look at the bride. His cinematic, slow eye movement swept across the massive ballroom until it locked directly onto Table 42.
