Chapter 9 - The Groom's Exit

Vanessa frantically grabbed the arm of her new groom, a wealthy real estate developer named Julian.

"Julian, do something!" Vanessa cried, her fifty-thousand-dollar designer gown shaking. "Tell your lawyers to fix this!"

Julian didn't comfort her. He stared at the federal injunctions on the table, then looked at the furious, disgusted faces of the elite investors in the room. He realized instantly that marrying into the Hale family was no longer a strategic power move; it was a one-way ticket to federal prison for money laundering.

He slowly reached up and untied his expensive silk bowtie.

"Julian?" Vanessa whispered, her voice cracking with sheer terror as she watched him back away.

"I'm annulling the marriage in the morning," Julian stated coldly. He turned his back on her entirely and walked straight out of the ballroom, abandoning his bride before they even cut the cake.

Vanessa collapsed into her chair, burying her face in her hands, weeping hysterically as her entire high-society universe was completely, violently vaporized.

My mother began to hyperventilate, clutching her chest as the sheer magnitude of their ruin set in. They had completely lost the money, their reputation, and their future, all in a matter of five minutes.

Elias looked down at my weeping father with absolute, freezing contempt.
