Chapter 2 - The Empty Chair

The cinematic realism of the suffocating, terrifying isolation completely paralyzed the maternity room.

Natalie stared blankly at the dark screen of her smartphone. She didn't scream. She didn't throw the phone across the room. Her grief was quiet, incredibly deep, and completely believable. She was entirely hollowed out, staring at the festive Christmas decorations with utterly empty eyes.

An early-thirties nurse with blonde hair in a practical bun and blue scrubs stepped softly into the room. She wore a stethoscope around her neck and looked at the terrified mother, instantly realizing the horrific truth. The husband wasn't coming.

The nurse didn't offer a pathetic, empty apology. She quietly drew a plastic chair right beside the hospital bed, reached out, and gently took Natalie's cold, trembling hand to ensure she wasn't alone in the dark.

A medium wide shot captured the devastating scene. The massive blue hospital blanket, the glowing IV equipment, and the beautiful holiday flowers completely surrounded the weeping mother. But the expensive, leather visitor’s chair sitting by the door remained absolutely, horrifyingly empty.

Three agonizing days later.

The soft bedside lighting illuminated the exact same hospital room.

Natalie sat up slightly in the bed, cradling her stillborn daughter. The tiny baby was fully wrapped in a warm, striped hospital blanket and a soft pink cap, her small face completely concealed. Natalie’s eyes were swollen from days of silent crying, but she held her child with absolute, undeniable maternal protection.
