Chapter 2 - The Dropped Roses

Something cold and incredibly dark moved through Lorenzo’s chest.

"What did she do?" Lorenzo asked, keeping his voice carefully neutral so he wouldn't frighten the child further.

Lena looked over her shoulder toward the hallway, as though someone might appear and punish her just for speaking. "She was mad. Mama told me to wait in the laundry room, but I heard yelling. I peeked around the corner. She poured water all over Mama."

Lorenzo’s jaw tightened. "Why was she mad, Lena?"

"She said Mama was stupid," Lena wiped a tear from her chin with a tiny hand. "She said Mama heard something she wasn't supposed to hear on the phone. She told Mama if she tells you, she’ll make Mama disappear forever."

Lorenzo felt his pulse slow down to a dangerous, lethal rhythm.

This wasn't just a rich woman throwing a tantrum at the help. Valentina had private friends and private meetings that Lorenzo had never bothered investigating deeply because he trusted her. He was marrying her in six weeks.

The white roses suddenly felt incredibly heavy. His fingers tightened around the stems. They bent. A white petal fell to the marble. Then another. He released the bouquet completely, letting it hit the floor between them.

"I'm going to find your mother," Lorenzo promised, standing up slowly. Every instinct he had developed over a lifetime of danger screamed at him to call his armed security team. Instead, he walked alone.

His footsteps were completely silent against the marble as he approached the east corridor. Valentina’s luxury suite was at the far end. The heavy double doors stood slightly open.

As he slowed his pace, a trembling voice leaked through the gap. It was Sophia.

"I won't say anything. Please," Sophia begged, her voice shaking with terror. "Just leave Lena alone."

"Then stop pretending you have a choice," Valentina’s voice answered. It wasn't the sweet, loving tone she used with Lorenzo. It was smooth, controlled, and dripping with venom.
