Valentina recovered her composure with terrifying speed. She quickly set the crystal pitcher down on a side table and forced a nervous smile.

"What are you doing home so early, darling?" Valentina asked sweetly.

"That wasn't my question," Lorenzo replied, not moving an inch from the doorway.

Sophia tried to stand up, her legs shaking. Valentina immediately took a step backward, playing the victim. "Lorenzo, this isn't what it looks like."

Lorenzo almost smiled. It was the exact sentence every guilty traitor he had ever executed used right before they died.

"What does it look like?" Lorenzo asked, his voice dead calm.

"Sophia became hysterical," Valentina lied flawlessly, gesturing to the wet maid. "She entered my room without permission. She overheard a private conversation about a surprise I was planning for you, and she threatened to blackmail me with it!"

Sophia stared at her in absolute horror. "That’s not true! I would never!"

Lorenzo raised one hand. Both women instantly fell silent. He walked slowly across the room, completely ignoring his fiancée, and stopped in front of the kneeling maid.

"Are you hurt?" Lorenzo asked Sophia.

Sophia hesitated, terrified of the woman standing behind him. "No, sir."

Lorenzo looked closely at the bright red welt across her cheek. He slowly turned his head to look at Valentina. "She hit you?"

Sophia’s gaze dropped to the floor. That was all the answer Lorenzo needed.

"Lorenzo, surely you don't believe a filthy maid over your future wife," Valentina scoffed, a flash of arrogant jealousy crossing her eyes.

"I believe what I saw," Lorenzo said coldly. He took off his expensive black suit jacket and gently draped it around Sophia’s wet, shivering shoulders.

Valentina paled. "You saw ten seconds out of context!"

"And I heard more," Lorenzo stated.
