Chapter 6 - The Lockdown

"That's cruel!" Valentina cried out, her eyes flashing with defensive anger.
Lorenzo almost laughed. The absolute audacity of the woman was staggering. "Cruel? You threatened a six-year-old child to silence a mother. You slapped an innocent woman."
"You're choosing them over me?!" Valentina shrieked, folding her arms defensively.
"This isn't about choosing," Lorenzo said coldly.
He stared at the woman he had planned to marry in six weeks. Six weeks until his powerful name became hers. Six weeks until the legal documents transferring massive portions of his multi-million-dollar holdings would take effect. If he died tomorrow, as his wife-to-be with power of attorney, she would inherit the empire.
After tomorrow, everything becomes mine.
Lorenzo slowly pulled his cell phone from his pocket.
Valentina stiffened, her eyes darting toward the door. "Who are you calling?"
"Marco," Lorenzo replied. Marco Santoro was Lorenzo’s ruthless, fiercely loyal chief of security.
"Why?" Valentina demanded, taking a step toward the exit.
Lorenzo didn't answer. He simply reached out and caught her wrist. He didn't grab her violently, but his grip was firm enough that she couldn't move another inch.
"Let me go, Lorenzo, I need air," Valentina panicked, her composure completely cracking.
"You're staying," Lorenzo said, hitting the call button.
Marco answered on the first ring. "Boss?"
"Lock the estate down," Lorenzo ordered, his voice echoing in the quiet luxury suite. "No one leaves. Not staff. Not drivers. Not guests. And Marco? Cancel my trip to Miami tomorrow."
Marco understood the deadly tone without asking a single question. "Done."
Lorenzo disconnected the call and finally let go of Valentina’s wrist. She rubbed her arm, slowly shaking her head in disbelief. "You're making a terrible mistake."
Lorenzo turned his back on her, extending his hand to help Sophia up from the floor. "Come with me, Sophia."
Valentina laughed bitterly. "You're protecting a maid now?"
May you like
"No," Lorenzo said, looking over his shoulder with eyes blacker than coal. "I'm protecting the witness."
