Chapter 1 - The Nine Thousand Dollar Betrayal

Breakfast smelled like black coffee, burnt toast, and years of unspoken resentment.
My father sat at the head of the table, stirring sugar into his mug like he was preparing to deliver mercy instead of a blatant insult. Beside him, my stepmother, Diane, smiled without an ounce of genuine warmth. My half-siblings—Mason, Claire, and Lily—were already glued to their phones, grinning like they were hiding something incredibly expensive.
Dad cleared his throat. “We’ve booked a trip to Italy. Just the five of us. You understand, right?”
I looked up from my plate. “The five of you.”
Diane’s smile widened, flashing perfectly bleached teeth. “It’s a family bonding trip, Ethan.”
I almost laughed. “I’m not family?”
Claire rolled her eyes dramatically. “Don’t make it a whole thing, Ethan. You hate traveling with us anyway.”
Mason leaned back, crossing his arms. “Besides, you’re always so busy with your little bank job.”
Little bank job. That was what they called my position because I never bothered to correct them. To them, I was just the quiet, boring son who paid the utility bills on time, fixed the Wi-Fi routers, handled their insurance renewals, and never raised his voice.
Dad gave me that tired, disappointed look he used whenever he demanded obedience. “You’re older. You understand sacrifice.”
I nodded slowly, keeping my face entirely blank. “Yeah. OK.”
The room visibly relaxed. They thought my silence was surrender. Lily smirked. But I wasn’t fine. I was just finished.
For years, I had been the invisible engine keeping that massive house afloat. Dad’s credit had completely collapsed after a failed business venture. Diane’s spending habits were a raging bonfire. Mason’s tech “startup” was just my emergency bank transfers wearing a hoodie. Claire’s law school deposit? Mine. Lily’s car insurance? Mine. They called me boring while literally living off the financial stability I built.
Still, being excluded from Italy didn’t break me. What broke something inside me was how easy it was for them to say it.
That night, I was brushing my teeth when my phone buzzed on the bathroom counter.
Bank Alert: $3,200 charge approved — Rome Luxury Suites. Bank Alert: $2,400 — Venice Private Tours. Bank Alert: $4,000 — Milan Designer Outlet.
Total: $9,600. All charged to my premium black card. The emergency card I kept in the family safe. The card they were never, ever supposed to touch.
I stood there, the mint toothpaste burning on my tongue, staring at the glowing screen. Then I rinsed my mouth, dried my hands, opened my secure banking app, and smiled for the first time all day.

“Yeah,” I whispered to the empty bathroom. “OK.”
