Chapter 2 - The Severed Strings

I walked into my home office and booted up my encrypted laptop.
My family thought I was a mid-level teller who cashed checks. I was actually the Vice President of Risk Management for one of the largest financial firms in Chicago. I didn't just understand money; I understood exactly how to dismantle a person's entire life with a few keystrokes.
I logged into the mainframe. First, I flagged the $9,600 Italy charges as stolen and unauthorized. The bank instantly froze the premium card.
But I didn't stop there.
I opened the joint accounts I had set up to help them survive Dad’s bankruptcy. With a single click, I removed Diane as an authorized user on the grocery account. I logged into the auto portal and canceled the automatic payments for Lily’s leased Mercedes. I logged into the cloud-hosting provider for Mason’s fake startup and deleted the billing method. I logged into the university portal and withdrew my financial sponsorship for Claire's upcoming semester.
Every single invisible parachute I had provided for them for five years was permanently cut.
Then, I opened a digital folder labeled Estate Documents. I printed a single, highly classified legal document, slipped it into a manila envelope, and taped it directly to the inside of the front door.
I packed my clothes, my electronics, and my mother’s old photographs into a single suitcase. I walked out of the house at 3:00 AM, leaving my keys on the kitchen counter.
As I drove away into the quiet, dark city, I felt a massive, suffocating weight lift off my chest.

By eight in the morning, my family had decided I was too harmless to hurt properly. But by midnight, they were going to learn that I was the only reason their lives still worked.
👉 The family was sipping expensive champagne in first class, completely unaware that their financial oxygen had just been permanently shut off.
